Three cases from the bench

These are representative of the kinds of pieces that come through the studio and how they're handled.

A 1970s manual wind watch, stopped for twelve years

The situation

The owner had received the watch from a parent and stored it, unsure what to do. It had stopped at some point and sat in a drawer. The crystal was badly scratched and the crown felt loose.

What was done

After a Quick Inspection, it became clear the movement only needed a careful clean and minimal adjustment to run again. The scratched mineral crystal was replaced with a period-appropriate flat glass. Crown reseated.

The result

Running within +/- 8 seconds per day. The dial and hands were not touched — deliberately — to preserve their aged character. Owner received a condition summary and continues to wear it daily.

A three-generation family piece, requiring conservation planning

The situation

A watch passed through three generations had a cracked crystal, a damaged crown tube, and a movement running erratically. The owner wanted the piece preserved, not polished into something new.

What was done

Full condition photography before any work. Written plan produced and agreed. Crystal replaced with an acrylic dome appropriate to the era. Crown tube refitted. Movement cleaned and observed over 48 hours on the timing machine.

The result

Watch running at +/- 12 seconds per day. Original dial and hands untouched. Documentation package provided including photographs and a written record of all work — useful for future reference or insurance.

A daily-wear watch with a stretched bracelet and foggy crystal

The situation

Years of wear had stretched the metal bracelet noticeably. The sapphire crystal had developed a fine surface fog from micro-scratches and a dial speck that appeared after moisture entered at some point.

What was done

Bracelet removed and fitted with a quality leather strap at the owner's preference. Sapphire crystal replaced. Dial assessed — the speck was surface level only and removed during the care process without affecting the dial finish.

The result

The watch now fits well on the wrist and the crystal is clear. The owner noted the strap choice changed the character of the watch considerably — they hadn't considered leather before but found it suited the piece well.
